Today brought the first snow of the New Year. There's something about snow. Even though it is cold and wet, it is beautiful and even fun. It helps that we have high-tech clothing that keeps us warm and heated homes that we can retreat to whenever we need to (unlike my ancestors in the Martin Handcart Company). Nevertheless, snow, like everything else, has its likenesses and ultimately bears witness of Christ. It can certainly make up for a lot of deficiencies and even make an old barn look beautiful.
Jeanne has never lost her sense of fun and she loves to have it with Addison. Somehow she is the designated snowman maker. (I'm sure his parents would have made one except Kelly is sick and sounds like a fragile frog right now and Annie, of course, is "medium" with child.) So Jeanne and I went down the street to make and record "The Making Of ..." the first snowman of 2008. His eyes are genetically inspired. The arms are replicas of Rodger. The waist was inspired by Becca. The hips, well, I better leave that one alone. And the hat is the only kind of hat to be found in the Ditto house - true blue Cougar fans - no room for anything else.
The picture of Addy was taken on the fly but I really like the results. It portrays pretty well what's going on here. Addy is just coming in from the snow, still bundled up, rosey cheeks, snow still on the hat and a look of satisfaction and contentment of having just had a great time with Nana.
The star hangs above Annie and Kelly's garage door. It was purchased by Patricia Benn on one of the Hickman girls' shopping trips to PA. When it was determined it would cost 3 times as much as the purchase price to ship it home, it was donated to whomever would like it. The picture doesn't express it's size (except that each of the siding sections is perhaps 9 inches which makes the star about 50 inches tall - anyway it was really, really big when the USPS and UPS and FedEx looked at it). The evening was done. Jeanne and Rodger were in the car, the camera safely packed away in its backpack, dinner was waiting at home, when Jeanne said, "it's neat how the star collects the snow." So, Rodger gets out of the car, unloads the camera and takes the shot. It's not such a great picture, but it's a great comment on what Rodger is made of these days!
