The Blessing of Friends

I just had to feel grateful last night for the blessing of friends. Pennsylvania has always seemed a long way from home, (whatever home is these days), but when gathered in our dining room with 15 friends to celebrate anything, we are at home. Last night was one of those occasions as we gathered with the Dittos, Raleighs, Shaffers, Erika DeCort and Bonnie Corbett to celebrate, as Kelly put it in the blessing, "Lyn's birthday ... party!" I guess if you're celebrating the party itself that gives you license to celebrate any time you want!
Lyn Shaffer's birthday had already passed a couple days earlier but somehow, gratefully, a party was planned for last night. Jeanne made chalupas, cornbread and a cake, others brought salad and beans, etc., and we mostly just sat around and ate and talked. The kind of thing friends do. And they do it because they are interested in each other's lives and share those lives.
Lyn turned 46. When, in answer to her query, she was told there were 46 candles on her cake, she exclaimed, "I've never had 46 candles on a birthday cake before!" Classic Lyn. She also observed, "Byron would never let us have this many candles on a cake." You'd probably have to be a friend to understand why Byron would never allow such a thing. As a friend, one day, Byron showed up at our house with Cassandra and installed about 5 additional smoke alarms. Having spent as many years as he did in the restaurant industry, I guess he's allowed to be concerned about open flames.
Of course, even at a casual gathering of friends, one of the upsides is picture taking opportunities. Maddy was just a baby when we moved here. Looks like 14 years of life have suited her well. Happy, beautiful, content. Nice job Valarie and Perry. The picture is candid, the kind I enjoy most. The colors are purely accidental, but perfect, and the look is pure Maddy.
